PLA (polylactic acid) is a biodegradable material derived from corn starch or sugarcane, fully decomposing into CO₂ and water within 90 days under industrial composting conditions. Its carbon footprint is about 60% lower than traditional PP (polypropylene). Until recently, PLA bag costs ran 50-80% above PP, blocking mass adoption.
In May 2026, leading Chinese non-woven manufacturers optimized PLA/bamboo fiber blending and continuous production lines, bringing PLA non-woven cost within ±5% of traditional PP. The two barriers to PLA bag mainstreaming — full degradation and cost parity — have been broken simultaneously.
Yage has partnered with PLA fiber suppliers to offer TÜV OK Compost-certified PLA bags including tote, envelope, flat-bottom and bespoke styles.
